My Students

Although our students come from low income neighborhoods, they continue to prove how high achieving they truly are. The growth in their maturity is matched by their new sense of determination to further explore the world and make their own lasting impression. Our students are looking for opportunities to learn from experience. They don't have the same prior experience that we often rely on while maturing.

We have created a curriculum that creates a safe space for our students to discuss and explore what the idea of culture means to them, and we choose a specific region or country to focus on each year.

This year we are looking at conservation and the environment, and will be learning more about Alaska. They are eager to learn about the history, the people, and the delicate environment.

My Project

Students spend the months before they travel conducting independent research on a specific topic that will relate to Alaska and what we will see while traveling. The experience culminates in a guided study tour of Alaska where students participate in hands on learning experiences designed specifically for them. This authentic form of learning has long been reserved for those who are financially stable.

Many of my students have yet to leave New York, let alone been on a plane.

Once students complete our program, we see an increase in how they attack their education. They become active learners, and begin to seek out these types of educational experiences on their own. This is not just an after-school program; it's a life changing opportunity that instills confidence, maturity, and above all a cultural sensitivity that is so important for the next generation to possess.
