My Students

Some of my students only have the books in my classroom to read. Some of my students can only build background knowledge from reading about other's adventures. I want to be able to provide as many adventures to my students as possible. I want my classroom to be the place that they can retreat to.

My students are a wonderful bunch of children.

They show up each and every day despite the hectic lives they and their parents lead. For some school is the only constant in their life. Our school is located in a low income section of the city. Many of my students come from one parent households, or grandparent households. They bring with them the baggage of many years of a non-structured school- but are doing their best to turn themselves around. Their school, a city school, was failing, and an outside source came in to turn it around. The students made great gains in our first year, and now during the second year we are working to keep that momentum going.

My Project

We have designed the curriculum so that students will have nearly an hour to read for enjoyment each school day. I have set up my classroom to be as home like as possible- using my own home decorations, attending many garage sales, and asking friends and family to donate their old throw pillows. What I am noticing is that my children are tearing through all the books we have, especially since many are on the same low reading level and many picture books can be read in one hour. I also noticed that although I have many pillows and rugs, it's not nearly enough to accommodate 25 5th grade bodies at one time. My students will gladly find themselves a private comfortable reading spot within our room, and jump into whatever adventures their pile of books have in store for them. Through independent reading we will grow life long readers who read because it's fun, who think about what the text is saying, who are adding to their background knowledge, and who are growing as readers.

Your donations will help my classroom to be a comfortable reading community.

My students will be able to escape in their books in my classroom and turn off all of their worries. Because of your donations my students will have plenty of books to choose from and will grow their background knowledge and help in understanding the things we may take for granted.
