My Students

Whether creating presentations for Women's History Month, taking notes on videos for research projects, or chatting with a faraway classroom, technology is an integral part of our classroom. I'm a self-confessed techie, and I want to instill computer literacy in my students!

If we are going to prepare our children for the 21st century workforce, we literally, and figuratively, need to get with the program.

My students are a motivated group of fourth graders. They attend our unique K-12 school in Southern California, with a total population of about 600 kids. Our school motto is: Never Give Up on a Dream. Our school focuses on developing the whole child, teaching not only academics, but also conflict resolution, confidence building, and social awareness. The teachers strive to make our school a place where kids want to be, and are inspired to be self-motivated, life-long learners. Our test scores are on the rise, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. About 80% of my class is on the free or reduced-fee lunch program, and 88% of my students speak English as their second or third language.

My Project

I am requesting a laptop computer for my classroom to replace the old one, which I have used every single day since it was purchased . A laptop computer will allow me to access the untapped resources that accompany our curricular programs. Our literacy, math, science, and social studies all have vast resources available on their websites. They also come with resources on CD-ROM and DVD. In addition to sharing this new information, I would also make use of the LCD I have sitting on my desk, which allows me to project examples, activities, and presentations to the whole class at once. That way, students would not have to huddle around one computer to observe and participate in lessons. By having a laptop computer in our classroom, students will see that a computer is an invaluable tool in the quest for knowledge. All of our curricular programs have a technology component included in the program. I am very comfortable using technology, and I want my students to experience these lessons.

The days of classrooms being overloaded with reams of paper and tons of bookwork are long over.

Think about it. Would you want to be a student in a classroom where the teacher had you bury your nose in a book all day, or would you rather be a student in a classroom with access to awe-inspiring images, engaging video presentations, and interactive learning sessions! I know which one I would pick! The best way to keep kids in school is to keep them interested. It makes all the difference.
