Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"It's like a plastic tree!" was a quote from one of my East Harlem fourth graders after seeing so many plastic bags stuck in a tree in our yard. She was right- the neighborhood in which they live has trash and litter all over and my motivated students want to do something about it.

My fourth graders attend an under-funded New York City public school where activity based projects are limited by the amount of money their teacher has to spend on materials.

My school has 100% of students eating free or reduced lunch, with a population of 30% English Language Learners. They are eager learners who love to participate in class discussions and activities and especially love to showcase what they have learned.

My Project

My students are an exciting, lively bunch who love to get their hands dirty- literally!- with any project. After seeing the "plastic tree" in our school yard, students decided to combine what they noticed with their current unit of study in science. In short- they decided that they wanted to clean up their neighborhood. To do this, they need resources to guide their projects. Some students have created a "Trash Task Force" while others have decided to put on a "Reuse Fair!" to showcase ways of reusing everyday objects. In order to do this, my students need resources to help them research ideas and possibilities, as well as to have information that will drive their work. It is my hope that while learning essential skills in literacy, research, report and letter writing, they will also be learning how to set goals and create an action plan, how to take initiative, and ultimately, how to take responsibility for changing their world for the better!

Not only will this project help to clean up our neighborhood, but it will make my students invested in life-long changes to our environment.

They are our future and I want to be sure we are leaving our planet in capable hands. My goal is that this project will be the first step in their life-long journey towards a greener planet.
