Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our large 7th Grade English/ESL classes, we have students from many different cultures and backgrounds. Students speak many different languages at home, and come together at school to create an enthusiastic, eager, and awesome group of learners.

This year, my co-teacher and I have students from the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, Bangladesh, and China.

Our students are coming with many different levels of reading ability, and our goal is to help create a classroom of powerful, confident readers. The students are excited to become stronger readers, and have jumped into their independent reading books this year with a great deal of zest and excitement. We want to keep this excitement going by providing a library full of books that are at their appropriate reading levels. We have very few students who are currently reading on the 7th grade level, and the reality is that middle schools don't stock enough books for students reading at a 2nd-3rd grade level, like the majority of our students. We are a new middle school, currently in our third year of operation. We have little in the way of resources, and are working slowly and steadily to build our classroom libraries.

My Project

These books and magazines will be used to enrich our independent reading library. Research shows that students need to be reading every single night in order to improve their stamina, vocabularies, and ability to comprehend texts. We want to support this practice by offering a library with lots of options for texts. Additionally, as I teach in an ICT environment (half general education students and half students with disabilities), my co-teacher and I will be using small group reading instruction (guided reading) frequently. We need the texts at students' current reading levels and just beyond in order to facilitate our teaching in these structures. With increased and focused reading practice, we know our students will grow and improve greatly this year in their reading abilities.

Many of our students are very self-conscious about their current reading levels.

They recognize that the books that they're reading look like "baby books" and that we don't have much of a selection. We need to help them feel comfortable with where they are, so that they have the ability to push themselves forward through practice. With these texts, students will have the tools and gain the confidence necessary to become stronger readers.
