Help Our Empty Tummies: Snacks for Hungry Kindergarten Students

Help me give my students snacks to eat when they are hungry at school and to put in their pockets to keep them from being hungry at home.

My Students

Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Most of my students come from low-income families, and all the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. This background can mean that students’ families cannot afford to purchase needed school supplies. Unfortunately, some of the students are experiencing homelessness which can mean that they lack items to meet their most basic needs.

My students deserve to receive the best education possible so that they are able to succeed in school and in life.

These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!

My Project

"I missed breakfast because I was late." "I'm hungry Teacher. I wish you had a snack for me." "I didn't eat much last night." These are all statements that my kindergarten students have made to me. Many of my kindergarten students do not have adequate nutrition at home, so they come to school hungry. They have difficulty concentrating on learning because this basic need is not met. I try to purchase snacks for them, but I am not always able to do this.

I am requesting snacks, including granola bars, Nutri-grain bars, popcorn and Goldfish crackers, to help reduce the hunger that my students feel at school and at home.

I plan to make this food available to students in the morning, if they are late and miss breakfast, and during snack time, since many of my students' families can not provide a snack for them. We have lunch at 12:40, which is a long time for five and six-year-old children to go without breakfast and snack. I will also send home some of these individually packed snacks, especially the granola bars and Nutri-Grain bars, in my neediest students' pockets, to help them be less hungry at home. By feeding my students, donors to this project will help them be able to focus on learning and acquiring the academic and social skills necessary to become successful students and adults.

Thank you for taking the time to read my project idea! This project is extremely important to my wonderful kindergarten students. Earlier this year, some awesome donors funded a similar project and my students were extremely happy and relieved to have the opportunity to have a snack when they were hungry. It has made such a difference!
