My Students

Help us communicate with the world. In a community that is changing so fast we are one of the few countries that still speak only one language. Our class would like to change that and become more educated by learning new languages and applying them to our cultural studies.

The majority of my students come from an African American background, while a small percentage are Hispanic.

These students come from a low income area in New York City. They attend a public school with minimal resources that is currently trying to become more modern with the use of technology. As part of their curriculum they are studying various cultures and they have chosen to focus on Latin America. They are very excited to begin our next writing unit which will allow them to write to their pen pals in Latin America. They are eager to write to them in English, but several of them approached me and asked if they could attempt to communicate with them in Spanish. This is a fantastic opportunity for these students to use technology, creativity, and motivation to attempt to assimilate into another culture.

My Project

In a world that is developing so rapidly around them students need as many resources as possible to succeed. We all know the importance of a second language, but for some reason our instruction in this area is very limited. This program will teach my students a new language, giving them the opportunity and advantage to make the most out of their lives. Not only will this program teach my students Spanish but it will also help them understand English simultaneously. Rosetta Stone will teach the students sentence structure, conjugation, verb tense, vocabulary, and so much more. It will also contribute to their knowledge of other cultures. Finally, I will also participate in these lessons. I have had great difficulty with several of my parents during conferences and calls home. Unfortunately a translator is not always present in our school and parent/teacher communication is always necessary. This program will give myself the ability to reach out to these parents.

This program teaches a new language through interactive lessons while reinforcing English.

It also adds to our journey as we strive to learn about new cultures. As we all know knowledge is power that cannot be taken away. I hope that we have the opportunity to help these students make the most out of their educational careers. In addition I will use this program as well to help myself better communicate with the parents of my students who do not speak English.
