My Project

A middle school chorus room is a magical place. It provides a space where students can express themselves, learn new skills, and gain confidence that will extend far beyond this short-yet-impactful stage of their lives. Sixth graders get the opportunity to meet and collaborate with the upper grades. Seventh graders often begin experiencing vocal changes and find themselves in a safe environment to work through them, and eighth graders start taking on leadership roles as they continue discovering their true identities through music. All of this growth and opportunity relies on the safety and stability of our music room, but without the adequate equipment, our classroom can not provide those key requirements.

Choral risers are an integral contributor to the success of our chorus rehearsals.

There's the undeniable benefit of tiered heights, affording all students the ability to engage with me as the director (and vice-versa) by providing a line-of-sight for everyone. They give the students a unique sense of community, working with their peers to combine their voices and create music together. Having risers also helps the students reframe their mindset into an ensemble environment, and impacts their participation since a chorus rehearsal is distinctly different than their seated classes throughout the rest of their school day.

This year, our choral program grew by almost a third of the size from the 23-24 school year! However, we currently have just three risers, which accommodates about half of the students, requiring everyone else to find a spot near their vocal section, while making sure they can see me the entire rehearsal. Unfortunately, one of our risers has become potentially unsafe, and should be replaced, in addition to all of the risers being a minimum of ten years old, keeping in mind they weren't new when they arrived.
