Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a high-needs Title I school in Oregon. I have students that come from varying households including several that are homeless. I have diverse co-teaching classrooms full of active, intelligent, and creative students. My vibrant groups of students have diverse social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Although they face so many challenges, they always come to school happy and excited to learn so we want to support them the best we can!
Our school is where our students feel safe and comfortable.
My students arrive at 7:40 in the morning and do not eat lunch until noon with the healthy snacks in this project such as fruit bars, and goldfish so I can keep them energized and comfortable for learning all day long! I have also added some weighted animals and tactile breathing visuals to help some of my students refocus and regulate their bodies during snack time and feel comfortable at school. If I can make sure they get a healthy snack, they will be able to better focus and build the fundamental knowledge necessary in the fall and continue to be successful throughout the school year.
This project is important because my students have a very long day and need some different snacks and regulating resources to help them stay engaged in their learning. Some students do not have food when they leave our doors, they depend on the breakfast and lunch served at school to eat. The additional snacks are a great way to curb their hunger and give them the nutrition they need to boost their working memory and brains.
