Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
I am teaching a 6th grade class of students with high functioning Autism, and the biggest challenge is keeping up with their profoundly enthusiastic work ethic. Our ambitions are held back by our school district being under-funded and greatly lacking resources.
They are extremely excited about creating a class store to earn money so as to take trips to local restaurants and practice functioning in the community.
Our school is full of teachers who love coffee, and we know starting a 'coffee cart' will not only help us earn money towards class experiences, but help practice vocational and life skills that will greatly help them in life and hopeful careers.
The coffee cart plan is READY TO GO, we just need the supplies! The students will be in charge of everything: using a create google-doc form to take the orders, make the needed amount of coffee per order, deliver the coffee appropriately, collect the cash or class Venmo, bookkeep on our payment spreadsheet, keep the supplies clean, and keep track of supplies inventory.
This project will not only develop important vocational skills, build relationships between our students and the rest of the school community, and serve as a blueprint for helping other Autism classrooms in my struggling district.
My name is Daniel Schiels and I have been teaching students with special needs for over 15 years. I strongly believe in incorporating functional skills/experiences into my instruction-- and giving my students real world experiences. I also know starting vocational skills early is vital, especially for people with special needs who may not have the same opportunities later in high school and post-secondary education.
Please help us! And help these amazing kids become better members of society, that they so badly wish to belong to!
