Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergarten is the most fun grade to be in ever! In my classroom, laughter, excitement, and learning go hand in hand. The only part about our day that can sometimes slow us down is the amount of messes we sometimes tend to make; especially when it comes to our cubbies and back pack area.

I teach 29 bright and adorable five and six year olds during the PM Kindergarten session at my school.

I also share my classroom with my partner, whom teaches the AM Kindergarten session. Because we share everything from our tables to our cubby spaces, organization is the key to keeping our classroom working as a well oiled machine. The most hectic time for us both is always the transition periods; most specifically during the beginning and end of the day routines when our students are either unpacking or packing up for the day. Part of our stress during this time is because our students are currently placing their backpacks on a "shelf" above their cubbies. It always starts off somewhat organized, but after adding class work and homework to their backpacks throughout the day, the backpacks end up in a disarray and create a huge mess by the cubby area. This also causes confusion for some students, as they have a hard time finding their backpacks because they get moved around.

My Project

If my partner and I had a backpack cart, the stressful morning and afternoon routines would be alleviated because our students would have a special place to hang their backpacks. They would no longer have to dig through a pile of backpacks to find theirs; they would have an assigned place to hang their stuff and would be able to keep their backpacks up off the ground. Many schools have hooks placed outside the classroom for students to be able to hang their stuff on, but ours doesn't mainly due to the high and low temperatures that come with living in the low desert. I have seen the benefit of using the backpack cart from observing and talking with other teachers at our school and would love to be able to provide one for our classroom. As silly as it sounds, having a hanging cart system for backpacks would really help organize my classroom, while also helping to teach my students to be more responsible with where they put their things.

Not only will the backpack cart help to keep our room organized and clean, but it will also help to teach my students responsibility because they will have a designated place to put their backpacks everyday.

Kindergarten is a child's first glimpse of what school is like, so establishing routines and procedures for students is so vital in this grade level. Also, the backpack cart will alleviate a lot of space for us to use for more classroom manipulatives and materials.
