This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students have persevered and overcome really challenging circumstances to make it to this country for an education. They live in shelters and temporary housing until they can find something more permanent. My students go to whatever lengths to attend school. My students are courageous, hardworking, resilient, and have smiles that can brighten the darkest room.

As the English as a New Language teacher, my role is to develop the language skills necessary for my students to succeed in their general classroom, and thrive in their new environment.

The support they get in my classroom helps their confidence, language production, and overall education in the classroom.

The items I selected will benefit my Kindergarten to 5th grade students because they will have games and manipulatives to learn CVC words, four-letter words, word-families, etc., pointers for our shared reading of songs, poems, and text. Phonics, concepts of print, phonemic awareness, and literacy are all foundational skills that non-English Language learners develop from before starting school. My English Language learners are coming in with a deficit in English vocabulary, and letter-sound relationships. These supports will help them develop the connections between letters and sounds, and words.

The gift card to Teacherspayteachers will allow me to find materials to differentiate for my group of K-5th grade students with varying English language proficiency. Some students need thematic lessons, others need graphic organizers/sentence stems, and others need vocabulary supports. The laminating sheets will keep the items I print out for my students to remain in solid condition and withstand day to day use.
