My Students

My students are very special to me because as a resource teacher, I get to work with them long enough to see their growth and needs over the years. My school is located in an inner-city low social-economic community in California. About 80% of my students are also English Learners. My students all have some sort of mild to moderate disability which impacts their learning in a general education classroom.

In my resource class, we value cultural and linguistic diversity as we work on meeting individual student's learning needs and learning styles.

Given all the learning challenges my students face daily at home or at school, they still come to my resource room for academic support with unbeatable zeal, happy smile, and strong motivation to learn.

My Project

My students always want to see my modeled lessons and work on their own solutions using their student whiteboard and good markers are essential to their effective learning. Most of my special needs students learn better with visual presentation or hands-on learning activities due to their special needs of auditory learning disorder.

Since my instruction targets meeting my students' visual learning needs, I use markers every day to present vocabulary, sentences, and math solving steps including drawing visual models and math strategies.

However, we often run out of our markers quickly due to our daily work and the limited supplies from our school. Most of the time, there is a break of marker supplies and I have to buy my own to supplement my classroom needs. The fading ink of the old markers often gets in the way of student learning as they cannot see clearly what the words or signs are. Likewise, I would have difficulty understanding their writing due to the drying markers.
