My Students

Do you know what it feels like to come to school on the first day without your school supplies? A lot of children in my school know that feeling all too well. This school year, I would like to ensure that all the children in my class have adequate school supplies and put a smile on their faces.

I am a special education teacher at an elementary school in Harlem, New York, one of the most poverty stricken neighborhoods in the state of New York.

Most of the children live in the projects located in the community and 95% of the children get free lunches every day. Many of the parents are unable to buy any of the items on the school supply list because they are unemployed.

My Project

The resources requested will help to make it easier for the children to have a smooth start at the beginning of the school year. Each school year the children are given a list of things they will need in class. I am requesting materials such as notebooks, pencils, glue, scissors, crayons, erasers are needed to complete assignments in class such as writing, math, reading and also to complete their homework. Each school year, I have to spend money to buy books, pencils among other things for the children. The children will be more enthusiastic to complete their work if they have the necessary supplies. It will also relieve the parents of some of the financial burdens of buying these things for their children.

Getting an education is these children's only way out of poverty.

I am doing my part to help them. Will you join with me and help them also? The majority of these children want to learn and if you can give a pack of pencils it will go a long way to help them. My students and I will appreciate all the help that you can give to us. Please accept our sincere thanks.
