My Students

I teach 11th grade U.S. History in a public charter high school in Washington, DC. 100% of the students are African American and 95% of my students come from Wards 7 and 8. Unfortunately, this is one of the areas most plagued by crime and poverty in the District, but our school is a beacon of hope.

This year, we are participating in a year-long competition--National History Day--with other high schools around the District and across the country.

This is the third year our school has participated! Since the first week of school, my students have been working on this college-level research process--from selecting their topic (this year's topic is Debate and Diplomacy in History), doing background research to understand the context of their topic, and finding primary source documents that give more insight into how their topic influenced to history. They will soon synthesize all of this information and write a research paper. Finally, after they've done intensive researching and writing, they must create a display board to showcase what they have learned and present it to the judges. Without some essential resources to make display boards, my students will feel defeated when they compete against their peers. This is why I'm asking for your generous support.

My Project

I'm so proud of what my students have already accomplished, and I know they're going to get so involved in the creative aspect of their National History Day projects if they have the proper supplies. These supplies will ensure that my students can focus strictly on the research process and not on how they're going to find supplies to showcase their hard work.

I chose to continue doing NHD this year because I truly believe it combines every essential skill my students desperately need--critical thinking, writing, reading, communication skills, and the ability to analyze and synthesize information.

Please help make NHD possible at our school. In the end, all of my students may not win the district or national competition, but they can all be proud of themselves when they've done something they never thought they could do.
