My Students

A typical day in my classroom is helping my students overcome their individual daily obstacles and helping them navigate our classroom so they can access learning and content. I want my students to be able to have a safe place where they can receive the necessary sensory input to foster learning.

I am a teacher in a District 75 school that services children with autism.

I have six amazing students in my class and two wonderful and devoted paraprofessionals. We all work together to create the most positive and productive learning environment for all. The majority of my students, who are 6 years old, are nonverbal and/or have very limited language skills. My daily goals are to help them express their wants and needs and to help them access academic content on par with their typical peers. In addition to academic learning I also help my students with daily life skills. With the proper amount of patience, care and devotion, I have seen a significant improvement in behavior and learning with each and every one of my students. I have also developed amazing relationships with the class parents and have been informed that all of my students are generalizing skills they learn in the classroom and bringing them to their homes!

My Project

My students will use the requested materials to help navigate the classroom and access academic content. These particular students require a significant amount of sensory input. The yoga ball will be incorporated in my "break" area where my students can release their daily jitters. I will also use it to help individual students complete their work. The ball will help them with their balance and focus. The same goes for the seat cushions; these will help my students will stability and focus. I work with a positive reinforcement system in my classroom. While some students are ready, willing and able to sit for instruction for approximately 5 minutes at a time, others are not. This is where the sensory hand massager comes in! My students will be rewarded for good sitting and paying attention skills with a sensory reward in their seat! This will help pair good in seat behavior with something positive. Therefor, the likelihood of good in seat behavior will increase in the future!

Having this project funded will help my students with autism receive the sensory input they are longing for but cannot express.

These sensory items will help improve stability and focus while incidentally teaching good in seat behavior and helps to strengthen the idea positive reinforcement.
