My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with word study where students practice sight word recognition and are quizzed to see how quick they can read and spell the words on their individualized word rings. For students who have difficulties, they practice on white boards or with magnetic letters.

My students are all kind, caring and eager learners.

They are fascinated by the differentiation that happens in the classroom and understand that different groups of children need different kinds of support from the teacher. They are helpful to one another and appreciate the value of education. They come to school each morning excited to learn and are disappointed at times when they have to go home. The school is located in an old building close to a homeless shelter, where some of the students in my classroom currently live. It would mean a lot to be able to provide these students with the essential resources they need in order to help them learn not only in the classroom, but also at home (wherever that may be).

My Project

Students will use the resources to practice sight words on their index card rings in school and at home to become better readers and writers. For students who cannot read, they will trace using white boards and dry-erase markers or magnetic alphabet letters. The other students will be able to sit with a partner during guided reading and read non-fiction texts and have discussions with one another. They will learn how to properly use materials in the classroom to help enhance their learning. In addition, some resources that go quickly, like index cards and dry-erase markers, are beneficial for students to show their peers their thought process for the visual learners. They also provide an essential tool for the classroom teacher since we are always writing or drawing to help our learners and that is a resource that runs/dries out very quickly.

This project will improve my classroom because it provides the essential tools that students need in order to become great readers.

We cannot stress the importance of being a fluent reader enough, and because third grade will be a testing year, we have to get the students on grade level now. It will change my students' lives for the better because the resources will help them strengthen their weaknesses by allowing the teacher to use different resources to help each individual student.
