I teach 11th and 12th grade Social Studies. My students learn the fundamentals of United States History, Economics and American Government. Our school is a large, ethnically diverse, urban school with a large amount of students from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds as well as many immigrants.
My classes are challenging and force my students to think critically. We use all the materials available to us and have worn out our textbooks and supplementary books. What we really need now is a way for students to do outside research in the classroom. Our school computer lab is shared by 2500 other students and is often in disrepair or occupied.
What we want is a laptop computer that can be used by students in class to help them undertake research that will broaden their understanding of topics that aren't explored in depth in the textbooks. This will also help students learn the valuable skill of evaluating sources for credibility as well as how to properly combine resources into an essay or presentation. All of these skills are essential skills for any college bound student.
Your help with this project will ensure that my students are more prepared to navigate the modern technological world of tomorrow. You will greatly contribute to their understanding of how to complete quality research, use critical thought to determine credibility of web based information, and help to make their learning experience more engaging.
