My Students

I am a Humanities teacher. I have the opportunity to teach both regular and special education classes focused on the subjects English and African American studies.

We are a Community School where the families in the area are able to come to the school to obtain services such as a used clothing shop, counselors and after-school programs.

The community is very diverse and we have a unique makeup of students that attend. I am so proud to be a part of this school.

My Project

As an English and History teacher, I would like an opportunity to find sources that I would be able to use in both classes. Through my classroom survey, I have found that most of my students dislike reading and could not name a favorite book. Could you imagine what an accomplishment it would be for them to say they read THREE books during the academic year?

The March graphic novels by John Lewis would be just the book that could engage my students!

Being from a diverse background, it is important for the students to be aware of the history in the book and this can be incorporated in the curriculum for the African American Studies course. But, the benefits will not stop there! As an English teacher, I will be able to engage the students in reading these books as we cover many of the necessary aspects of the curriculum! The 30 copies would remain in my classroom so each class could read the books.
