My Students

Do you have a favorite memory from your elementary school years? It was likely something you DID and not just something you read about in class. As city dwellers, most of my students do not have opportunities to go outside in nature and learn about science and the earth with their own two hands.

Thanks to you, our new Environmental Science lab and rooftop vegetable garden passed its first year with amazing success!

The kids love it!

Though my students come from different backgrounds, they all love to plant and explore the garden and eco lab. Their innate connection to nature draws them in to explore and learn in a safe environment.

My Project

My students love to work with their hands and learn about the environment! Our school garden serves 600 K-5th grade students in New York City. All of our children get to plant, harvest, grow, and taste--- vegetables and herbs in our school garden.

This year, I wish to expand their experiences with some STEAM-based technology to bring the garden into the classroom and share back to their families, while sparking their imagination for environmental science projects.

A time-lapse camera has been a dream for several years. My students could study and see the changes that happen over time, reduced into a few minutes. This would be even more meaningful than a video they see because they would create it in their own school garden---They would film plant growth, seeds erupting, flowers blooming, tomatoes ripening, and our favorite--monarch metamorphosis. Just imagine children being able to film a butterfly eclose from their chrysalis! Even better, to be able to share that with their peers and families.

My students also need more equipment for hands-on experiences with their studies. A stream table for students to do live erosion experiments has been an unfunded wish for three years. My students like to be in the garden, so we need equipment to study our beautiful habitat. Soil thermometers to see the effect of the sun. A scale to weigh and measure produce. Insect collection tools for studying our insects, and observing predators. Measuring jars to keep track of experiments. Best of all, (life skills!) journals to keep everything organized.

Please help my students have amazing hands-on experiences that enhance their studies while giving them the opportunity to enjoy and understand our planet. Experiential learning with hands-on experiments is what my students do best. Please help them grow and learn with the tools they need.
