My Students

My fourth grade students are eager aspiring writers. They love to tell stories of space aliens, trips to Grandma's house, and what it was like to immigrate to the United States. But they are often unsure of how to write their fascinating tales with correct spelling.

My kids are an extremely diverse group, in terms of ethnic background, socioeconomic status, native language, and special education needs.

They all come together at our small urban elementary school in New York State, where they read and write every day, in every subject area. For the second year in a row, I'll be collaborating full-time with a special education teacher, working with a higher proportion of special-needs kids.

My Project

One support that I have found to be extremely effective is the spelling dictionary. For the past few years, I have received grants to buy copies of a spelling dictionary for every student. I have observed that spelling dictionaries are great motivators. The kids love having their own dictionaries in which they can independently find words that are important to them, words that they need in their writing, and words that are related to the social studies and science subjects that we are studying. The Scholastic Dictionary of Spelling by Marvin Terban is ideal for children of this age. It includes over 15,000 words, which are displayed in bold face and broken into syllables, making it easy for students to locate and read them. In my experience, once students have looked up a word once or twice, marking it in their own copy for future reference, they often remember the correct spelling in the future.

Fourth grade is a crucial year for establishing standard spelling habits; if students do not acquire these now, it becomes much harder for them later.

Individual spelling dictionaries provide consistent support in standard spelling. With dictionary in hand, each child can get immediate help and move on with his or her writing. This simple tool can make all the difference in nurturing successful writers.
