Help My Students Learn to Crochet

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn to crochet. I have a student in my afterschool craft club who knows how to crochet and is willing to teach her peers. We just need the materials.

My Project

My Arts and Crafts Club (in a very low-income, urban area) has been meeting on Wednesdays for two years. We have made candles and soap(thanks to DonorsChoose), beaded jewelry, coasters, and magnets (funded by me). One of my students asked if I could teach crochet or knitting. I don't know how, but another student said she knows how to crochet. This started a groundswell of desire to learn. I have found two building teachers who have offered to help them get started in addition to the club member.

Learning to crochet is a great way to create wearable art, create gifts, and relax.

According to PubMed, "crochet offers positive benefits for personal well-being, with many respondents actively using crochet to manage mental health conditions and life events such as grief, chronic illness, and pain. Crochet is a relatively low-cost, portable activity that can be easily learnt and seems to convey all of the positive benefits provided by knitting. This research suggests that crochet can play a role in promoting positive wellbeing in the general population, adding to the social prescribing evidence base.." (Burns P, Van Der Meer R. Happy Hookers: findings from an international study exploring the effects of crochet on wellbeing. Perspect Public Health. 2021 May;141(3):149-157. doi: 10.1177/1757913920911961. Epub 2020 Apr 3. PMID: 32245337).

Once the materials are purchased, the yarn will be the only expense for them to continue exploring. Based on the information from the crocheting student and the staff, they often return to crocheting when feeling troubled. If funded, I will ensure that each student has at least two crochet hooks to take home so they can continue.
