I work with a diverse and amazing group of 4 to 5 year old students in a Brooklyn public school. Children at this age should learn through meaningful play and my students love to play!
It is important to ensure my students are also learning important social and academic skills while playing and we need learning toys and materials to do that.
We need a puppet theatre to practice story plots, characteristics, and gain a love of reading. We need dramatic play materials such as play money to learn math skills and learn about jobs, baby doll items to learn about family roles and responsibilities, and items to make an ice cream truck (which my students specifically asked that I request). We need plush book characters to use as reading buddies since these motivate children to want to learn how to read and read books multiple times a day. These plushies also are used for our cozy corner to manage emotions. All of these materials will help my class learn important academic and social skills through fun and meaningful play.
