My Students

I have three classes filled with English language learners, special needs kids, and struggling students who read below grade level. The majority of my students think nonfiction is "boring." I am on a mission to teach them otherwise, by exposing them to as much nonfiction as I possibly can.

My students don't realize how important it is to read nonfiction books.

They don't realize (yet) that nonfiction is how you learn about the world. My students are in 6th grade, so typically in their world, it's all about them. Most of them don't yet realize that there is a great big exciting world out there, waiting to be discovered. My students need more access to nonfiction books to help them learn more about the world.

My Project

I need more nonfiction books in my classroom library. My students are at an age where they need to be exposed to as much nonfiction as possible. Young people are naturally curious, and I want to feed that curiosity by giving them more nonfiction in the classroom library. I work at a large school, and our nonfiction libraries are chronically underfunded. For every 20 books I receive, only one or 2 of those is nonfiction, and these children deserve more.

Nonfiction holds a special place in my heart because it helps you learn about how the world works.

These kids are at a turning point in their young reading lives. Being exposed to more nonfiction will give them the tools to gain more knowledge about the world and give them more of an opportunity to be successful in life.
