Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school serves newly arrived Latino students at the high school level. Coming to a new country as a high school student is hard, and our school uses a bilingual model so they can get their content classes in Spanish while they learn English. This way they don't fall behind while they "sink or swim." We believe in valuing the students' native language and using that to build their English.

We are an urban, Title I school with a high success rate: 94% of our students graduate on time, which is well above the city average.

They graduate as fluent speakers of Spanish and English, and many take AP courses and head on to four year colleges.

We are immensely proud of our work and our students. We know that the support and respect they receive is crucial for their success. Like many urban schools, we do not benefit from the fundraising of PTAs. We have a limited budget and do what we can. We believe they deserve access to the same enriched educational experiences as any other high school student, and strive to make that happen.

My Project

My school recently found money to purchase Rosetta Stone, which is amazing, but the program requires headphones with microphones which we cannot afford.

Second language students suffered during Covid by not being in the classroom learning English, and without a lot of input and daily practice, language learning at this age is very difficult.

They are now far behind, and if they can access this program, it will help them make gains quickly. Without basic literacy, they will struggle in their other coursework. But with the correct headset, they can use the program and catch up on their fluency.
