My Students

Twice a week we enjoy some quiet time to read whatever we want. My students have enjoyed reading my magazines, but now we are out and need your help to feed our reading monsters!

I teach many reluctant readers.

Some of the books in the book room make me wonder why there aren't more struggling readers at this central Virginia high school. Innovative teachers have worked hard, but the resources to hook kids on reading just aren't there. With your help, they will be!

My Project

A variety of magazines will provide students with an engaging, immediate reading experience. When we're done devouring the words in our sustained silent reading program, we can use the images to explore themes of power, gender, and popular culture through collage and conversation.

Over the years at our school, we have created a culture of free choice reading that mirrors how pleasure reading works for adults.

What we need, however, are new texts that are immediately relevant and engaging. By investing in our magazine subscriptions, you'll be providing months and months of tantalizing texts for students to enjoy and a love of reading that will follow them for the rest of their lives.
