I am into my second year teaching physical education at a public school in the inner-city. Upon accepting the position, I had no idea the chaos and clutter I was walking into in regards to the gymnasium closet. There was no room to walk into the closet and I had fears of going "missing" if I tried to access equipment in the back of the closet (I had a couple close calls!). Since last year, I have been able to down-size in regards to outdated or an over-abundance of the same equipment to make more space within the closet.
While anyone in the school is now able to walk safely and freely in the closet to access equipment, I still need items to continue to organize and make space so that I may place any future orders for items to benefit my inner-city students such as: team building, functional fitness equipment, additional sports equipment such as badminton/pickleball, etc.
Over half of the students in my school come from the inner-city and live at or below the poverty line. Most or all of the physical activity they participate in happens within the school environment, therefore, I want to continue to expose my students to games and activities they 1. Would never normally be able to participate in outside of school and 2. that helps them grow physically, mentally, and social-emotionally. The more activities I can expose them to, the more likely they are to find something they are interested in that will keep them active into middle school, high school and their adult years.
