Iran, Syria, Vietnam, Thailand, Congo, Somalia, Guatemala, and Mexico......These are just a handful of the countries that my students are from. My students come from over 20 countries and their families speak over 40 languages. Imagine our student potlucks....YUM!
Many of my students' families escaped conflict in their home country and came to America seeking a better life for their kids.
Most of my students are several grade levels behind and have had inconsistent schooling. Our school is located in low-income/high poverty area. 100% of my students are economically disadvantaged and most are English language learners.
Despite the many disadvantages my students face, they are hardworking and dedicated to learning. My students love to read! They love all types of novels and stories and many have started to write novels of their own. Reading helps give them a voice to their own stories and allows them to tell their powerful stories.
My Project
I am a second year teacher and this past year I realized that my students love to read! Looking back on the year, my students retained, learned and remembered more when they were able to engage with meaningful content by reading. As a teacher, I want to get as many books as possible in their hands.
My goal is to get engaging books in their hands that allow them to the learn, explore and experience American history!
The Wild West and King George books are by Steve Sheinkin, an author that my students love! He presents American history in such a engaging and fun way while still remaining true to the facts! I am also teaching an Academic English course to refugee kids that have had limited English instruction so the rest of the books and supplies will go to help them grow in their reading ability. I will use the sight word flash cards and bingo to increase my student's fluency and the whiteboard to help with their penmanship. I am also teaching AP US History for high schoolers so I will use the test prep books to help them prepare for the test.
