This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
You can be a part of making science come ALIVE to my Kindergarten children! I teach 19 children in an all-Kindergarten school with 410+ students (22 classroom teachers). Our school is a Title 1 School. Our percentage of children speaking English as a second language (ESL) is around 40%. Our percentage of free/reduced lunches is near 70%.
Considering our large ESL population, we really focus on literacy skills with strong emphasis on language and vocabulary. I manage to squeeze in theme time for science/social studies every day. However, I do not do as much of it as I would like. My students are excited by the small "experiments" we do. I am writing a few proposals in hopes of building up a good Science Corner in our classroom.
I am asking for a "Science Discovery Chest" for our classroom. Students using this will be able to explore the following topics: living things, light & color, magnetism, air & weather, earth & water, and motion. These are all units I currently teach but I do so without materials to support them. With science, children learn much by having free exploration. They discover concepts while working with other children. The excitement in their eyes when they "get" something is priceless. The chest comes with 80 (wow!) experiments and the materials needed to complete them. I can use this science chest with my future students as well.
By choosing to fund this project, you will play an important role in "hooking" my students and aid in facilitating a love and excitement for science; possibly supporting a future famous scientist! I integrate all of my units of studies. I need more science activities to really do it justice.
