Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When I think about students receiving special education services the most important word for me is SPECIAL! That is what my students are. I work with students with disabilities in grades Preschool through First grade. Each student has unique needs and it is my job to meet those needs.

My students aren't just special because of their unique abilities, they are also special because of the diversity of their backgrounds.

Our school is located in the most diverse neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Families from various ethnicities, religions, socioeconomic backgrounds, and experiences live together in our community. I believe this gives our school the amazing opportunity and challenge of meeting each student exactly where they are

My Project

There are many different types of learners. Some students learn through movement, some students learn by listening, and some students learn by interacting. One way to engage students in interactive learning is the use of technology.

Differentiation is the basis of a special education teacher's work.

Each student's needs are individual and must be meant as such. By accessing programs like Lexia, ST Math, and more students are able to purposefully engage while they have fun and their different needs are met simultaneously. These programs are research-supported instructional tools that allow students to reinforce their learning independently, free from direct adult interaction. Independence is a crucial skill for all young learners to master, but can be especially important for students with special needs. Students with disabilities are frequently receiving direct instruction for the majority of their school day and therefore miss the opportunity to practice skills on their own. Technology provides an opportunity for these students to work free from adult interaction while still receiving the prompting and visual cues that they need to succeed.

My students will use their new tablets as an extension of their instruction. The structure of my lessons typically follows a standard pattern: mini-lesson, group practice, independent exploration and practice. These tablets will act as a new part of independent practice. Following the introduction of a new skill, and the group practice of that skill, students will be able to practice using a visually stimulating platform. Moreover, these tablets will allow me to differentiate my students' practice in a new way. One student can work on one to one counting, while another student can practice identifying numerals to 20. The programs available for use on these tablets provide immediate feedback on each student's work.
