My Students

Many of my students are reluctant readers, but once they are introduced to a text and begin to explore it, they become immersed and want to keep reading. Many of them struggle because they are English language learners, but they are eager to build their reading skills and want to improve.

For the majority of my students, English is not their first language, but they work hard to build up their reading and writing skills in English.

They are always looking for new books that will help them improve but will also transport them to different worlds and introduce them to new experiences. They also like reading about characters with whom they can connect.

My Project

During one unit of study, my students read the first two books in the Parvana series ("The Breadwinner" and "Parvana's Journey"). They loved the unit and wrote many insightful writing pieces about the books. Many of them have asked about what happens next in the series and are eager to read the next two books. If this project is funded, they will be able to read the rest of Parvana and Shauzia's story. This project will also add two other titles to our classroom library that I know the students will enjoy. One is a contemporary realistic fiction novel to which the students can relate, and another tells a fantastic story and will connect to their social studies curriculum (in which they explore Greek mythology).

This project will foster my students' love of reading.

It will help them continue a story in which they are already invested, and it will also introduce them to new stories. Through reading these books that interest them, the students will improve their English reading and writing skills and will open their minds to a wide range of experiences.
