Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Statistics repeatedly confirm that if a child does not learn to read by the end of first grade, he or she has only a one in eight chance of catching up. It is my vow to my students that 0% of them will fall behind, and this could be made possible with the help of a document camera. The students in my room are beating the odds each and every day. These children are raised in a low-income community and do no receive many of the resources they need and deserve at home. Additionally, as a first-year school in this community, we are often not provided with these same resources that the students need and deserve. We instill a "College for Certain" drive within these students and I am confident that 100% of my students, despite their often grueling circumstances, will one day graduate from college. However, their college education starts now and statistics show that if students fall behind in lower-elementary school, their chances of catching up are slim to none. My students are set on going to college, and I will do anything in my power to ensure that happens.

With class sizes growing, students are getting less one on one time with the teacher.

A document camera would help us to analyze student's work as a group. This would create students learning from other students. My school is located in a predominately Hispanic community. Over 80% of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The families in the community are incredibly supportive of their child's education. My school's vision is: "College for Certain". We believe that preparing for college begins in Kindergarten, with purposeful, data-driven education, in which kids are served the best education possible. Teachers are held accountable through weekly collaboration and observations.

My Project

A document camera would help engage students in all areas: language arts, math, writing, science, and social studies. Read-aloud books, worksheets, and writing samples will be projected for all students to see and follow along. Learning will be much more interactive, as students will be fully engaged throughout the entire learning process. The most valuable of all will be projecting books on a large screen so that every book can be a "big book" and, as a class, we can decode difficult words and practice various comprehension strategies which is crucial in first grade. The students deserve the fighting chance to beat the odds of literacy in low-income areas. The discouraging outlook for low-performing students is even reflected in the high incidence of reading difficulties among the prison population. Some states even estimate future prison populations based on third-grade reading scores. My students will not become another statistic. They will become the bright future of our world.

A document camera will be used every single day in the following ways: 1) Students will be able to share their own work with the class, by placing it under a document camera.

This will allow students to learn from each other and be able to take a teaching role in the classroom. 2) During editing and revision lessons, students will easily be able to see first hand how to make corrections to their writing pieces. 3) A document camera can be used to increase visibility while working with math manipulatives and other resources. 4) Books can be placed under a document camera, to increase student interaction with the text during read aloud time and other reading lessons. A document camera would allow my students to continue to make amazing strides in their writing and learning by increasing student participation and interaction. A document camera would enhance lessons every single day. Thank you for your consideration!
