This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A study of fossils is not complete until you get to personally manipulate and study fossils up close. My students need actual fossils to enrich our unit. We also need trade books and visuals to create a learning experience.

I teach about 90 bright and enthusiastic 6th graders in a urban public school in Washington, DC.

The students are curious and love hands on activities. They really learn the science concepts by applying the results of laboratory explorations. The visual and hands on reinforcement, as well as the real world applications, really tie the concepts together. My students are always asking when we can do more labs and I try to do at least 3 or 4 mini-explorations a week to keep their thirst for knowledge alive. However, being at a school with limited resources, it is often difficult to obtain all the materials I would love to incorporate into their experiences.

My Project

With these supplies, I will be able to create a truly hands-on and multiple modal unit on fossils for my students. The resource books will provide me with ideas and the background knowledge construct a meaningful unit. The trade books and field guides will allow my students read about and reference the topics throughout the unit. The fossil samples will provide my students with a wide variety of actual fossils to examine. This will allow them a much more personal experience with the fossils than looking at pictures in books would. The students will be able to compare the fossils and identify them based on properties, as real paleontologists would. In addition, the posters and video will add a visual component to the unit, enabling more learners to be successful with the material.

This project is crucial to our fossils unit.

We currently have no samples, books, or visuals related to fossils. Without these supplies, the unit will consist of articles adapted from the Internet rather than the truly hands-on realistic experience I love to provide for my science students.
