This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students might be put down for their disabilities, but music is an area where they can shine like the rest! My students look forward to the hands-on music class I provide about once a week; however, it is difficult to manage with limited materials and many student ability levels.

My amazing students are full of personality, but struggle with learning challenges such as mild/moderate autism or intellectual disability, moderate/severe learning disability, or ADHD.

Our school is in a rural, agricultural area, with many students living below the poverty line. My current class size is 14 with 1 kinder, 2 first, 3 second, 4 third, and 4 fourth graders.

My Project

My students need 4 beginning books for learning recorders and four 15-note wood xylophones to enhance the classroom music program. Third and fourth graders are exposed to the recorder, and younger students have a few rhythm instruments and one vintage toddler xylophone. Right now I have working recorders that were discarded by the high school music program, but I only have one book. Getting several more books would make lessons go smoother and allow kids to work on their own songs. Moreover, I plan to make a take home kit so kids can check out a book, CD, and recorder to take home and practice. All kids enjoy the vintage xylophone although the wheels are long gone and one note doesn't work. They have learned to play gently to get maximum sound. However, the younger kids could begin learning notes with the colored and lettered xylophones I am requesting.

With this project, students will be able to learn more, and my goal would be to have my students perform at the school talent show or other programs given by the school.

In this way, they do something they love and are recognized for something they CAN do, not just recognized for their learning challenges.
