My Students

When teaching students with autism, it is necessary to create a learning environment that is interactive and engaging. Many of my students struggle with attending to tasks and many people believe they are not capable of learning, however they can -- just in a different way. These students require very tactile and visual learning strategies typically involving sensory play to keep their attention.

Although my students have diverse learning needs, I make sure to provide multiple opportunities for them to learn using a multi-sensory approach.

My students are unique, eager to learn, and rise above their disabilities. I learn from my students every day and want to provide the best possible education for them. They strive every day to be their best selves and continuously inspire me to be a better teacher.

My Project

Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorders demonstrate some degree of sensory processing dysfunction. Sensory play is any activity that stimulates a child’s senses such as touch, sound, taste, sight, and smell. Allowing children the opportunity to freely explore with sensory activities helps to facilitate understanding and creativity.

Engaging children with autism in sensory activities is beneficial in several ways, as it can help with stimulating the brain, improving sensory processing systems, improving social skills such as communication and cooperation and calming children down when they are agitated.

Also, it helps improve coordination, as well as fine and gross motor skills.

We are requesting a beanbag seat and liquid floor tiles for the Sensory Suite they need to thrive and succeed! Sensory play can be helpful in regulating and even preventing meltdowns for children with autism or sensory processing disorder. Allowing children to independently explore sensory activities can teach them how to calm themselves and self-regulate their emotions. This helps them get their much needed sensory-input, which leads to reducing meltdowns from over stimulation and teaches them how to prevent future emotional meltdowns. Sensory play will always have a place and be an important part of child development.
