My Students

Our community is very diverse both racially and socioeconomically. My 8th graders are curious and love to engage in hands-on activities. This summer, as 7th graders in Summer Rising, they grew many vegetables and herbs in our new outdoor garden. They would love to continue this project indoors during the winter and design a mini hydroponic system to grow food at home.

My students will have the opportunity to connect their botany background with their engineering skills to build a classroom size hydroponic system and create mini designs for their homes.

My Project

My young scientists will be engaging in an exploration about climate change and its effect on the environment. After learning about how human actions may impact the environment negatively, they will explore ways to enact change. Student will design sustainable alternatives to reduce our carbon footprint at home and at school. Having the opportunity to create a project design such as a hydroponic system will increase their interests and excitement.

The goal is to have my students not only create a hydroponic system in our classroom to grow their own vegetables, but to be challenged to design a similar sustainable system for their homes.
