Help my students experience of wonders of nature by watching plants grow from seeds to plants in our school garden and by raising butterflies.
I teach first grade at a wonderful Title I school where 50% of our student population participates in our free breakfast and lunch program.
Also, a significant number of our student population are English Language Learners. Our families come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds and experiences. Each child comes to school eager, excited and ready to learn.
My Project
I want to turn my students "green" by having them plant seeds, tend to the seeds, watch them turn into plants, possibly eat what they have grown, and also experience the wonder of the metamorphosis process from caterpillar to butterfly. To help me accomplish this goal we need a Butterfly Kit, a Crystal Clay Seedling Kit, a Seed Starter Kit, a Root-Vue Farm and a Tickle Me Plant Kit. Our school recently renovated its much neglected school garden and it has growing beds that need to come to life. Most of my students have never had an opportunity to grow something of their own. I want to build pride, a sense of accomplishment and an awareness that each of us needs to take care of our earth. These activities also coordinate with the Life Science component of the science curriculum.
This project is important because if one person becomes more aware of being "green" and taking care of the earth it can make a difference.
Help me enrich my students' lives and raise eco-friendly children. My hope is that the "FEED USA" program and other donors will make this project become a reality. My aim is that my students will take what they've learned at school and carry it over into their everyday lives. GO GREEN!
