Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students want to make a difference! Many of my students are the first generation born in the United States. They do not have much in financial means but are big in heart, and they have a fantastic work ethic! They also want to help and contribute to our community and society!

They attend a public school in an ethnically diverse neighborhood.

Their parents range in age from their early 20’s to their mid-40’s and vary significantly in their education level. Many of my students and their parents speak languages other than English, with little to no fluency. There is a broad range in my students’ academic abilities, skills, and interests, yet they are very supportive of one another. These young learners are fun to be with and enjoy taking responsibility for their learning.

My Project

This year, my 4th graders and I will be experiencing our first beginning at home. This was fine last year since I had already spent 6 1/2 months with them. However, this year I will start with new students who I had only interacted with during our STEAM academies last year. Building relationships and getting to know them when we were meeting face-to-face was one of the most essential interactions in my classroom.

With online learning, I will need to get to know each of my students, as individuals, without ever being able to interact with them face-to-face.

During our whole class Zoom meetings, my students are displayed in a tiny area. By connecting my laptop to a large monitor, my students' image will become larger. I will be able to view my whole class and see each child as well as to notice small "visual cues" easily within my classroom but might otherwise miss in the virtual setting.

I want to keep my students actively engaged in their learning while interacting with me via Zoom. A larger monitor will support this purpose. It will allow me to toggle between my class and my lessons quickly. I'll be able to take advantage of this monitor by having a larger virtual working area. It will also allow me to facilitate my students to learn and navigate the required 21st-century skills necessary to be active and productive during these times.

Especially in an elementary setting, physical schools cannot be replicated by online learning. However, using technology effectively to make robust learning environments will facilitate knowledge that will allow my learners to have better learning opportunities. Appropriate devices will assist in accomplishing to continue to build strong relationships during the meantime.
