I am a 5th grade teacher to 27 eager learners. I teach all subjects, however I only teach reading to 25 of my 27 students. We are not a Title-1 school, therefore there is little to no money for the 'extras' that enrich a child's learning experience.

While 10 of my students are identified as gifted, all my students are eager learners. And while a few come from military families where they have traveled a bit, the majority have never left the east coast of North Carolina. I feel their world is too small - they need to see what life is and was like in other cultures and in other times. One thing the children love is to talk about other countries. I feel Number the Stars would be a wonderful introduction of what life was like for a girl their age in a time of war.

I am requesting individual copies of the novel, Number the Stars. If everyone student has their own copy, they can follow along as we build our comprehension and fluency. It will open up invaluable discussion about a horrible time - World War II and the Holocaust. Most of my students have no idea that there are so many other cultures and religions - I want them to be accepting of all people by getting to know a young girl during her time of distress who is of a different culture and religion than my students.

Your generosity will ensure that my students have the resource to learn of other people and places - to help open their eyes to those who come from other worlds. You can make a difference in these wonderful children's lives - just as I try to do but don't always have enough resources to make sure it happens.
