Can I listen to a tape? That's the line I hear most often in my class. I am a teacher in NY. I teach a self-contained class of 12 special-ed students. They are a 4/5th grade class. Most of my students are bussed in from low income areas and come from problematic homes.

The children in my class face many obstacles. They have very low self-esteem due to their delayed academic success in addition to situations that some of them face in their personal lives. These children want so badly to learn and be successful. They are very bright, but have disabilities that interfere with learning in the traditional way. Their needs vary greatly. Some are visual learners, auditory learners, and others are strictly hands on learners. I want to provide them with as many opportunities as I can to reach their goals. As their teacher, that's my goal. I have found that they love to listen to tapes. It seems to be a common interest among all of the kids. The can see, hear, and have a hands on approach to being introduced to material that will help them in all academic areas. I have never had a child say no when I asked him to go to the listening center. Unfortunately, I don't have the headphones or the equipment to run a great center. I have one headphone and everyone wants to use it. My books are all over the place.

If I had the jack, the headphones and the rack to organize it all, it would be so wonderful. I would actually be able to teach the same thing to most of the kids at the same time. I'd be meeting all of their needs. They would be doing something they enjoy and can understand. I feel that would promote a better self confidence, broaden their knowledge of appropriate grade level curriculum and in the end make my students happier and more successful.

With your help, my students will have a greater sense of self confidence. You will help close the gap so they can come closer to meeting grade level standards in a way that is appropriate for them. I know they would be so appreciative to anyone who can help them have a great listening center. They are great kids! I'd be extremely grateful as well.
