My Project

I am a first-year teacher at a Title I school in the San Fernando Valley teaching 10th and 11th Grade English. Being a first-year teacher, I will step into a brand new classroom the day before teaching, while most other teachers have years to make their classrooms lived-in and equipped. I have lots of student artwork to put on the walls, but a lot more goes into making a classroom look like a home instead of an office building! I've listed some alternatives to overhead lighting, snack packs, play-dough, school supplies and baskets to store them in, and necessities such as menstrual pads/hand sanitizer/tissues.

Alternatives to overhead lighting help to decrease overstimulation in students, creating a calm learning space; fidget toys such as play-dough help students exert energy in a healthy way and even better absorb information; snacks, hygiene products, and school supplies help them feel cared for in school regardless of their socioeconomic status.

Each of these items is proven to help students with their comfort and development in school and would be significantly appreciated! I hope I can make my classroom feel like a home by day 1 with these items so my students feel ready to learn!
