My Project

I have been accepted to a program to learn American Sign Language (ASL) through the Deaf Hearing Communication Center in the Philadelphia area. I need the textbook, "A Basic Course in American Sign Language" to support my learning in the class. I also would like to have some posters to hang in my classroom so that my hearing students can learn basic signs and start to be able to communicate directly with their deaf peers instead of always having to rely on an interpreter.

Inclusion is more than putting students in the same classroom or other spaces and requires intentionally helping students to learn about others in their community and develop the skills to include all.

While we have amazing ASL interpreters in classrooms with our students, it does not allow for direct communication between me as their hearing teacher and them or between deaf and hearing students. I would like to learn ASL so that I can communicate directly with ALL of my students and colleagues.

Providing me with the text book and posters will allow me to turn my professional development of learning ASL around immediately to my students in the classroom and they can learn with me. Please help make my vision of full inclusion a reality in my classroom and help me and my students all communicate directly with each other.
