Part of having an effective learning environment is to make sure it is clean and safe for the children to work in. That is why I am requesting a vacuum and a 27 box supply of tissues for my classroom. I am a 2nd grade teacher at an inner city charter school in New York. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced school lunch, come from single family homes, and are at risk emotionally and academically. In addition, I have several special education students who need a lot of time and support.

In our school of 300 students, we only have one vacuum to go around. The janitors are supposed to vacuum, but they only end up doing so about once a month. The vacuum we have often breaks, which results in weeks of dirty carpets filled with dust and other allergens that exasperate my student's asthma and other illnesses. The school has also stopped supplying tissue because of budget cuts. During the winter months we go through a box or 2 of tissues a week! I cannot afford to keep supplying my students with tissues. I want to be able to still control the germs and dirt in our classroom despite these obstacles.

In order to help clean the dirt, dust, and allergens that get trapped in my classroom carpet, I am requesting a commercial vacuum for my classroom. This would help me clean my carpets every day. I will no longer have to worry about my 2nd graders sitting in dirt while teaching lessons and my students will no longer have to worry about making their asthma worse. I have also requested a set of 27 boxes of special allergen tissues that trap airborne bacteria. This will help to reduce the amount of germs spread from student to student (and to me as well!)

With your kind donation, we will be able to keep our classroom as a clean and safe environment as well as reduce the amount of illness that goes around. These are essential needs in today's classroom, and we need them desperately to get by! We thank your for your support!
