Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day we come in and get right to work. When my students enter the gymnasium, it is non-stop movement. We begin with an intense 5 minute run/callisthenic workout to jump start their engines (and I do the workout along with them). We then get to our lesson and end with nice static stretches.

The students at our school are given a chance, which is rare in the inner city of Philadelphia, at college.

We are a college prep school, teaching the students how to become successful not only now, but in the future. Students mainly come from low income urban environments, where not only are they statistically fighting the odds of going to college, but also even graduating high school. We give them a shot at making it. 75 percent of our 9th graders enter at least 5 years behind in reading and math, but by the end of their first year 86 percent of those students will catch up. 84 percent of students graduate in four years compared to the Philadelphia district school average of 60 percent. 94 percent of graduates go on to college and 84 percent of graduates who enrolled as first year college students returned. Our school guarantees a safe environment, proactive in peer mediation to resolve disputes before they escalate.

My Project

These Plyo boxes are VERY versatile, and are just a piece of the cardio-conditioning program that I am building. This would include timed stations where students are working collaboratively to get a workout and then graduate to putting a circuit together for themselves and others! I like this set because there are 6 different boxes, giving students the freedom to workout at their own level.

My passion in the gymnasium is fitness for life.

Our school is all about college preparation and I believe that even in the gymnasium this is important. My mission is to instill the value of teaching students how to get a vigorous workout while having fun. When I was in college, the amount of adults who would be in the school fitness center with no idea what they were doing was incredible. I want to change this by helping students become successful and healthy future college students sooner.
