My Students

We have no art or music program, so I incorporate as much creativity into the curriculum as possible. Focusing on stories and student-written plays through theater engaged all students at a high level. A camera would help share these experiences with families and the school community.

This is an urban 1st grade in the pacific northwest.

Our school is Title 1, which means 80% of students receive free or reduced lunch. There is a significant percentage of students who speak languages other than English at home and I work hard to celebrate this. There is no majority language; 30% speak Somali, and 22% speak "other." There are significant populations who speak Tagalog, Vietnamese, Spanish, Mandarin, and East African languages. One of the best parts of the school is that the students do not recognize how diverse the cultural influences are. They take for granted that they speak different languages than their friends and that each person's home is different from everyone else's. With such diversity, learning to read, write, and speak in English is a shared experience. I see my job as making this experience enjoyable and memorable. I make it engaging and challenging. I make it rewarding and rigorous. Above all, however, I make sure they are leaning in a safe space.

My Project

I will use the camera to supplement my readers' theater instruction. When we read books as a class or in small groups, summary is a key skill for first grade. One of the best ways for students to demonstrate this is to rewrite the story in their own words and act it out. Last year, we experienced success by having groups of students read their story summaries as plays for the class. Based on this success, I want to teach the students how to read and move like actors. I want to use readers' theater to incorporate not only summary and oral reading but reading with expression and gestures as well. An important part of this process is for all of us to watch our performances and revise how we move as characters. This is hard to do without a recording device. Additionally, I will be able to use the camera to document how I introduce and teach the process, as well as, how I guide students during the process. Video recording has been a valuable way for me to improve my teaching.

This is a durable, high megapixel, rechargeable camera.

It will help us grow as readers and writers by emphasizing the fun of literacy. As first graders, this will likely be their first time performing in such a role, and this camera will undoubtedly increase student investment as well as thoughtfulness. I would love to send each student home with a copy of multiple performances that families can enjoy for years to come.
