My Students

My students motivate me each and every day. They are thoughtful, strong, funny, insightful, kind, driven young people who push me each and every day to be a better teacher, and a more socially conscious individual. They demand so much from me, as I do from them.

My students face a variety of challenges--they attend school in an underfunded district, in a city plagued by segregated violence, run by individuals who fail to acknowledge the link between the two.

Despite the shortcomings of many of the politicians and leaders around them, my students come to school each and every day with an eye toward the future. They work hard to do their best, overcoming obstacles no child should face as hurdles to education, shaping themselves to be the change-makers we need in our workplaces and public institutions.

My Project

In my Gender Studies 2 class, I have 16 committed, curious students who are struggling a bit to fight a stingy case of senioritis! In an effort to fight this, I would like to read "Between the World and Me" to discuss issues of gender, race, class, and how the body is politicized in society.

With their own copy of this book, they can annotate and mark it up as they read, and will be able to take it with them as they head off to college in just a few short months!

This experience will also give them a chance to see what learning in college will be like, needing to manage their own pace, and come to class having prepared their own reactions and contributions to discussion.

This book is so well-written, so beautifully argued, and is timely for our world. My students will be challenged by it, and yet will be able to digest it and apply to their own world. Please help with a donation to make this happen! Thank you!
