My Students

My students are under-credited and over-aged who will age of the school system. We are located in Queens, NY and many of the students take public transportation to school. We are the last chance most of them have to receive their high school diploma. Many of them come from low-income households or broken homes and have children of their own or have been in trouble with the law. The majority of our students really want to graduate and try very hard to attend school and complete the work.

My Project

My students are all from low-to no income families and households. They come to school without eating in the morning and do not bring anything for lunch. They usually do not have money to purchase food and water. The drinking water in the school is not viable, so they have to bring their own.

Many of these students are too proud to admit that they don't have anything to eat or drink.

If I can provide them with a snack, a granola bar or a bag of chips, it can help hold them until they can get food. It will help them concentrate and focus on the work in class. We do not have vending machines in this school or access to the cafeteria. If they do not bring food or water, they will not be able to leave to buy anything during the school day, since we are a closed campus. Access to food and water is also important because it helps them settle down and pay attention to themselves instead of the student drama going on around them.
