My Students

Do you ever get so lost in the book you're reading that you lose all sense of time? Unfortunately, many of my students haven never had the sensation of being so absorbed by a book they don't want to put it down. My students often tell me they hate reading and do whatever they can to avoid it.

My students are motivated students who are choosing to attend a college-preparatory charter high school.

While they care about school and their future, they don't always understand the power of reading in helping them achieve their goals. Most of my students come from low-income, immigrant families and will be the first person in their family to attend college.

My Project

I am requesting a wide variety of books that will engage and inspire my students to read as we begin a school-wide independent reading program. Our teachers and staff understand the importance of reading in helping students build better vocabularies, become better writers and gain the skills they need for success in college. We have chosen to adopt a 20-minute a day independent reading program to help students read daily, but in order for this program to be successful, we need books that students connect with and will want to read. Our school doesn't have a library, so by stocking my classroom with great books, I can ensure that every student in my classroom has a great book in their hands each day.

Your donation will help my students learn the power of reading and help our school in our quest to make our students college-ready!

With your help, no student will waste their independent reading time on a book they don't like or don't connect with as we will have a rich, diverse and high-quality classroom library at their disposal!
