I teach in an inner city school in a program called The Achievement Academy. These are kids who have not yet passed Eighth grade, but are too old to be kept in middle school. I have each class for two periods (a block schedule), so we wind up doing two years in one. In a couple weeks, we are going to be reading The Odyssey, and I would love to have the opportunity of bringing in some of the Greek myths and gods into our curriculum as well.
One of my favorite memories in high school was when I learned about the Greek myths and gods. They were such interesting stories, sort of like ancient comic book heroes. In fact, I think my love for the Greek myths is one of the reasons why I became an English teacher in the first place. Also, students who go to college are expected to be well rounded individuals who possess a background in a variety of topics. I expect all of my students to go to college, and I believe having a background in Greek mythology will help my students be well rounded individuals.
D'Aulaires book of Greek Myths is a wonderful way of bringing this knowledge into my classroom. This book is loaded with illustrations, which will help my students picture these stories, and the words are manageable. I remember this book from when I was a kid. I spent many hours reading the fascinating stories, and imagining what life would be like back then. If we were to get these books, I would read a myth to the students every day before starting The Odyssey. Afterwords, as an assessment over our Greek mythology unit, the students would work together to create a magazine that illustrates their knowledge of the Ancient Greek culture. For instance, they might interview Circe at her palace, or talk with Hera about what it is like to be the wife of Zeus. I would also expect the students to put advertisements in their magazine, but these advertisements should have mythological allusions, such as Hermes telegrams or Helios balloons.
I want my students to have the same opportunity as I had when I was young. I want to bring to them the excitement of Greek mythology, for this will help increase their literacy while also preparing them for college. Your donation will help bring literacy and knowledge of the ancient Greek culture to my classroom.
