Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach first grade in a Title I-funded, public school in a low-income area of the Bronx where over 95% of our students receive free lunch. Although many of my students face adversity, their challenges do not define their ability to learn and be successful. I teach twenty of the sweetest and most eager six-year-olds. Their desire to learn even in the midst of a pandemic never dwindled once.

My Project

It is so important for the students have materials that help them represent themselves in the classroom. This year I will be doing a lot of activities that ask the students to draw themselves and create self portraits. However, I lack the needs to provide my students with these resources.

I want to provide my students with multi-cultural resources, such as skin tone crayons, markers and paper that they can use to identity their complexion.

I also need additional markers and paper to help facilitate my instructions. Lastly, I am asking for some craft projects to help celebrate some upcoming holidays. I want my students to have a safe space in which they can share their identities and cultures. I think doing these activities will help them express and learn more about themselves and who they are.
